This review is from: Excellent Date, Terrible Date: The Matchmaker’s Guide to Where the Boys Are and How to Get Them (Paperback)

This is a thin book, 124 pages, and equally thin in useful information for women who want to get back into dating. It’s an simple read you can breeze through it in an evening and then you can wish you had spent the evening doing something worthwhile. It is, as others have noted, and apparently loved, loaded with anecdotes about Marla and her experience as a matchmaker. but this doesn’t translate into dating advice.

A couple of things she did imply were, “Don’t bother tiresome if you are stout. Lose weight first. Or ancient. Men don’t want ancient.” There were examples of women who had triumphed over their age disadvantage–with Marla’s help–but the weight? Guys don’t like stout women (and apparently there are no stout men looking for dates in Los Angeles). As far as where the boys are, I don’t recall a release example of that, unless she meant they are available at her matchmaking service. Nor does she tell you how to tell who’s right for you, though she does tell you obvious ways to tell who is ill-treat–for anyone. So the title has small to do with the content.

You do not end this book and say, “Yeah, now I’m going to go out there and date.” I reflect there’s a excellent chance this book was written solely to drive business to her matchmaking service, and as 124-page advertisement, it does well, but had I celebrated that’s what it was, I would not have bought it.

I’m certainly not looking for a soul mate but on a whim, bought Excellent Date, Terrible Date. Now I’m glad I did! This was not the book I “thought” it was. Marla’s principles were sound, spiritural, enlightening, and RIGHT ON! Even if you’re not looking for a soul mate or I don’t know happily married, this book is for you. Marla tells it like it is with humor and wisdom. Excellent job Marla! Now you have a fan for life!
