Fantastic book even for men, January 20, 2008

It sounds like Bookman is an Mad Man and had a very terrible divorce. I
read the book and I am a man and I thought the complete opposite of
what he said. Despite the title, the book is really promoting
husbands and wives to get along, and was surprisingly excellent. It says for
the wife to be nice to the husband so there is always open
communication, especially when children are involved. As far as what
the author wrote about the advice huritng kids– over again I can’t see
where he’s coming from. It seems like the book is showing how to
improve dynamics, even through a nasty divorce. Even though I tried to
dislike the book, I really wish the author would write the same book
for us guys. It was really simple to read and understandable and the tips
    seemed insightful for the women.

…something like divorce when it’s so state dependent. She does emphasis consulting with an attorney for your individual state about many cirumstances, but then why would you need this book? Divorce law just varies way too much from state to state to generalize about how best to go about getting one. She gives useful tips on how to behave and keep the proceedings civil. “Letting the tears flow” during property division negotiations is pricelessly sexist! Additional than that, the title would lead one to believe the book is about enacting revenge against an evil husband, but she really recommends against this approach. Also, she covers no-fault and fault style divorce but doesn’t even mention collaborative which is gaining in popularity. Not with lawyers but with prospective divorcees, which is maybe why she doesn’t elude to it. Collaborative divorce is NOT lucrative for lawyers by design. It’s also unknown in North East states where she practices. Which is why, if you’re going to get a divorce, get a lawyer. Every state and now and again county, is different to one degree or another. This book won’t help that much because of that.

Best book for women going through divorce that I have read, September 10, 2011

This review is from: He Had It Coming: How to Outsmart Your Husband and Win Your Divorce (Paperback)

I volunteer with domestic abuse survivors and, in particular, two who are navigating the minefield that is divorce. So I bought seven books from Amazon to enable these women to do well for themselves and their kids. The seven books I bought were: He Had It Coming, The 10 Stupidest Mistakes Men Make When Facing Divorce, Divorce and Money, Honest Share Divorce for Women, Divorce After 50, Man’s Guide to Civilized Divorce, and Getting Divorced Lacking Ruining Your Life.

Honest Share Divorce for Women is written by a Qualified Financial Planner. She has no useful advice on getting your honest share and, in fact, she advocates giving up a lot if you are a woman because you didn’t say to the marriage anyway. That one kind of shocked me. The title is misleading. It appears that this book is written for women. In fact, it is not. It is one very long sales piece recommending all kinds of services of a Qualified Financial Planner that will run you tens of thousands of dollars upwards to hundreds of thousands of dollars. I can’t imagine that the advice in this book would be helpful to anyone going through a divorce, male or female. You can google “household financial documents” and get more useful information. This is supposed to be a divorce book. It’s really not. Frankly, I’m amazed this is a second edition.

If you are looking for books to help women steer divorce and get their honest share, there’s one book I would recommend: He Had It Coming. I read it in three hours and found a wealth of information, including documentation, courtroom behavior, and strategies in and out of the courtroom. That book is really written by a female attorney who was a divorce attorney for over two decades. She is an advocate for women and her book was the only one that really shined in information and what women need to do to make sure they get their honest share of the marital assets and income.

The 10 Stupidest Mistakes Men Make When Facing Divorce is more about strategies for attorneys of really terrible men, men who take and deal drugs, men who abuse their wives, men who abuse their children, men who want to hide every asset, etc. The author, Joseph Cordell, and his wife Yvonne are probably the scummiest public I’ve read about in recent years. They are both high-priced attorneys who take on really worthless men and get them “honest” divorce decrees. I felt like taking a shower after I read this disgusting book. Anything useful? Nope. And I’m kind of glad he doesn’t give any useful info because I wouldn’t want any of these guys life successful in court.

Sam Margulies’ two books, Man’s Guide to a Civilized Divorce and Getting Divorced Lacking Ruining Your Life were useless. Written by a court mediator, he is paid to settle cases out of court, so his view of the divorce process is extremely skewed. He imagines a fairytale divorce in which the world is perfect and so are the couples getting divorced. Not. Therefore he fails to provide any useful information at all. If things went this smoothly, you wouldn’t be looking for a book. If your partner was this agreeable, you probably wouldn’t be getting divorced.

The last two books, Divorce and Money and Divorce After 50, I have not read. I will try to update my review once I have.
