Engaging pics, questionable motives, April 26, 2000

Brilliant, evocative photography. But, there are a number of author’s comments in this book which are nearly mean-spirited and/or over-sexual, and not in keeping with the stated pleased-go-lucky semi-innocence of the project. More prurient than sweet, in a couple cases. And gratuitous, in one or two cases. Whether the photos and text document real relationships or not (there seems to be some doubt), overall the book doesn’t come across as a nostalgiac suggestion on young friskyness. It seems more like a sleazy Internet photo arcade of “ex-girlfriends,” or a collection of photos depicting women who don’t suspect they’re life written about on a bathroom wall. Not that this inherently makes it terrible (or undesirable), but it certainly won’t meet the expectations of public looking for excellent clean naked fun.

HONEST, CHARMING, FUNNY – I like this book!, April 6, 2000

This book chronicles, in detail, what romance and like was like through a fantastic period in American history. I reflect anyone who thinks this book is pornography is an idiot. It isn’t about nude photos. The author offers a voyeristic view of all the intimate details of his like life with these women. Now and again amusing and romantic. At additional times the book borders on crass. Overall, this is a very honest and unique piece of work.

This provocative new book documents one man’s sexual journey and shows a nation of Peeping Toms how to do voyeurism right. The work is a diary, a confessional, a pop cultural tale, and, I don’t know most resonantly, an elegant reminder of why we are all avid voyeurs. As you go through the book, you find yourself identifying with Helfrich because you increasingly realize that you know these women – from your own life…the feminist, the earth mother, the crazy artist, the temptress, or just the girl next door…and you walk away feeling like you just had an honest talk with another guy about sex and women.
